Address: 18 Clapham High Street, Clapham, SW4 7UR
It’s not hard to stumble into a pub around Clapham, there’s a hell of a lot of the things. The trick is finding one that’s actually good. The Railway Tavern is one of them, damn good in fact. Especially where Sunday lunches are concerned.
Aside from the rather impressive interior decor, there’s a fair bit going for the place. Board games: beer and a burger for £9 every Monday (the West Country beef burger with Cornish brie & bacon jam, seriously), a pretty damn good pub quiz on Wednesdays and a £1 off all keg pints on Tuesday nights. We even ended up at a free comedy night when we went there a few Sundays ago.
Sunday’s is the operative word here. If you really want to sample the best The Railway Tavern has to offer then it’s the roasts you want to be heading towards. The 21-day-aged British Isles sirloin of beef, Half a roast of Shropshire chicken with Cumberland & gingerbread stuffing & a chipolata or the Free-range Cherry Orchard pork loin with crackling, they’re all pretty much spot on. Massive as well. Which is one of the main things we look for in a Sunday dinner.
Add to that an impressive selection of beers and wines along with a friendly bunch of serving staff, and you’ve got yourself a pretty smug hangover come Monday morning.
